I’m Max Turner, this year’s Raids Officer, and this is my first blog post, celebrating the success which last month saw, when SUSU RAG had our first street collection of the year for Breast Cancer Now, a cancer research charity.
Two minibuses travelled up to London on Thursday evening, and after an evening of drinks and getting to know each other in the hostel in Kensington, we awoke nice and early to hit the tube and rail stations of the city!
Armed head to toe with pink fancy dress, and buckets in hand, we shouted, sang and looked silly in front of the hoards of Londoners, trying to get donations wherever we could.
There were some fantastic individual performances, with two of Southampton’s collectors managing to raise over £1000 each!
We came away victorious at the Breast Cancer Now Mega Raid in London last month, beating all other RAG’s who attended, to take the title and win the trophy ‘BEST RAG’. Per person, volunteers managed to average the highest raised, coming ahead of Universities including Loughborough, Manchester, Birmingham and, local rivals, Portsmouth!
The trophy is recognition for all the incredible hard work our volunteers put in on the day. It’s fantastic to see so many new faces; the majority of volunteers actually collecting on the day for the very first time.
Breast Cancer Now managed to raise a grand total of £76,947.58 on the day, an incredible amount which will help towards funding ground-breaking research projects, supporting nearly 450 of the world’s brightest researchers at more than 30 institutions across the UK and Ireland.
The next Mega Raid is on the 29th of January for St Mungos, a homeless charity based in London. However, we are also in the process of organising a raid in Southampton for one of our three main charities this year, Red Lipstick Foundation, which is a suicide bereavement and mental health awareness charity based locally. If you’re interested in being involved with other street collections this year, email me at email@example.com
Rag love xoxo
